2009 04 28 'Tribute to late jazz musician - Gito Baloyi'

The Legal Resources Centre (LRC) is honoured and humbled by the gesture made by Ms Judith Mason on 1st April 2008. Ms Mason made a generous donation to the LRC as a way of celebrating the life of the late musician Gito Baloi, who was her close friend. The contribution was made in the name of the late musician to assist in the work of the LRC.

Mr Baloi is remembered by some of his friends, not only for being a talented bass player and great musician, but also for his concerns for the environment and peace in the world. He became famous as a member of the award-winning jazz group Tananas and released several popular solo albums. Mr Baloi passed away after he was gunned down on the 4th April 2004.

Ms Mason said the idea of giving to the LRC as a way of paying homage to her friend was inspired by the kindness and enormous support the LRC's Senior Counsel, George Bizos, showed to Baloi's widow after his tragic death.

Gito Baloi's name will be memorialised in our 2007/08 Annual Report and in the history of the LRC, together with other individuals who declared their support to making South Africa a better place by contributing to the LRC's sustainability.
