2009 03 23 'LRC's Human Rights Day at Gandhi Square with George Bizos'

On 20 March 2009, the Johannesburg office of the LRC, together with George Bizos SC, a distinguished human rights Advocate who fought and continues to fight against human rights violations in South Africa celebrated Human Rights Day at Gandhi Square from 10h00 to 14h00.

These are some of the comments made by the LRC's staff members about the event:

'It was most significant how pleasantly surprised people were when they found out that we did not charge for legal advice. It was a wonderful day that gave the LRC an opportunity to showcase its work to the public.' George Bizos SC

'The LRC's Human Rights Day raised people's awareness of how each individual can assert their rights as enshrined in the Constitution.' Annette Reed

'It was a good idea for the LRC to celebrate Human Rights Day at the Square. In the future the LRC should conduct such events more often and in different areas closer to the people that we serve.' Catrin Verloren van Themaat

'The LRC's Human Rights Day was fantastic!' Bill Swannie

'It was absolutely extraordinary to witness the passion on the faces of the LRC staff members as they went out of their way to reach as many people as possible at the square, I was inspired!' Nomfundo Gobodo

'The LRC's Human Rights Day was great. We would love to pursue similar events on other days such as Freedom Day, Youth Day and Women's Day.' Wendy Isaack

'Human Rights Day at Gandhi Square was truly inspirational and served as a reminder that the law is not always just , but aspires to be. Although we have made some positive strides as human rights lawyers we still have much to achieve.' Sushila Dhever

'We made an effort to inform people in different languages that the LRC provides free legal advice.  A number of the  people we spoke to and couldn't adequately assist on the day, have since visited the LRC offices.' Bongumusa Sibiya

'I think that the LRC's Human Rights Day was both successful and informative. I do think that next time we should consider taking our services to the townships where many people in need of legal advice are based. As people usually come to the city on errands, I felt that there wasn't enough time to consult with everyone that I spoke to.' Nathi Mkhize
